Agroforestry at Green Gold Social
At Green Gold Social, we promote agroforestry as a practical, farmer-led solution to rising input costs, soil degradation, and climate stress faced by small-scale farmers. Our work responds to a simple reality: many farmers, especially women and youth, cannot afford chemical fertilizers, and not all have access to agricultural input support programs. At the same time, prolonged use of artificial fertilizers continues to degrade soil health and reduce long-term productivity. Agroforestry offers a low-cost, regenerative, and climate resilient alternative.
Why Agroforestry
Smallholder farmers are the backbone of household food security, yet they are increasingly vulnerable to climate shocks and rising production costs. By integrating nitrogen-fixing trees into farming systems, farmers improve soil fertility naturally, reduce dependence on external inputs, and build long-term resilience.
Our Approach
We work with over 300 small-scale farmers in Chikwela Village, Chongwe District, supporting the integration of indigenous and fast-growing tree species into maize-based farming systems.
Key species include:
- Musangu (Faidherbia albida)- A long-term solution for nitrogen fixation that steadily improves soil fertility over time.
- Gliricidia Sepium- A short-term solution that grows quickly and provides rapid nitrogen benefits to crops.
When intercropped with maize, these trees shed leaves that decompose into natural compost, improving soil structure, moisture retention, and crop yields without chemical fertilizers.
Multiple Benefits for Farmers
Agroforestry delivers environmental, economic, and livelihood benefits:
- Improved Soil Fertility: Nitrogen-fixing trees regenerate degraded soils naturally.
- Reduced Fertilizer Dependence: Farmers rely less on costly chemical inputs.
- Climate Adaptation: Improved soil moisture and organic matter help crops withstand erratic rainfall.
- Livestock Support: Gliricidia leaves are used as fodder for cows, goat and sheep, especially during dry seasons.
- Sustainable energy: Tree branches are harvested as renewable firewood, as Gliricidia regenerates rapidly.
- Green Energy and Income: Leaves mixed with cow dung are used to produce eco-friendly briquettes, creating an additional income stream for farmers while reducing pressure on natural forests.

Impact
Through our agroforestry initiative, Green Gold Social has:
- Supported over 300 small-scale farmers
- Improved soil fertility and crop productivity without chemical fertilizers
- Increased access to livestock feed, sustainable energy, and alternative incomes
- Strengthened household food security and climate resilience
Agroforestry at Green Gold Social is not just about planting trees, it is about restoring soils, lowering costs, and building resilient farming systems that work with nature.
