Green Gold Social’s Reforestation Initiative

At Green Gold Social, we are restoring Zambia’s degraded landscapes through community-led reforestation focused on indigenous tree species that have been heavily depleted by illegal timber harvesting and charcoal production. Our work directly addresses deforestation, land degradation, and climate change, while creating sustainable income opportunities for communities.

Our Focus

Our reforestation efforts prioritize Musangu (Faidherbia albida) and Mutondo (Julbernardia globiflora), indigenous tree species that have been extensively cut down for charcoal and illegal timber. By restoring these species, we support biodiversity recovery, improve soil health, and rebuild ecosystems that are critical for climate resilience and rural livelihoods.

Our Approach

Our reforestation model is community-driven, science-informed, and sustainable:

  • Indigenous Tree Planting: We prioritize native species that enhance local ecosystems, improve soil fertility, and support water retention.
  • Community Engagement: Local farmers, youth, and women are actively involved in seed collection, nursery management, and planting campaigns, creating a strong sense of ownership and stewardship.
  • Capacity Building: Through workshops and practical training, we equip communities with skills in agroforestry, climate-smart land management, and tree nursery operations, enabling sustainable livelihoods alongside ecological restoration.
  • Collaborative Partnerships: We work closely with local leaders and stakeholders to ensure alignment with community priorities and strengthen long-term impact.

Key Activities

  • Seed Collection as Livelihoods: Indigenous women and young people earn income through organized seed collection of Musangu, Mutondo, and other native species, transforming conservation into a source of dignified work.
  • Tree nurseries and Seedling Production: Collected seeds are nurtured into healthy seedlings through community managed nurseries.
  • Seasonal Tree Planting Campaigns: During rainy season, community restore degraded land through coordinated planting efforts.
  • Education and Awareness: We raise awareness on deforestation, illegal charcoal production, climate change, and sustainable land use through trainings and field demonstrations.

Impact

Through our reforestation initiative, Green Gold Social has:

  • Reforested 1 square kilometer of degraded land
  • Planted over 20,000 indigenous trees, including Musangu (Faidherbia albida) and Mutondo (Julbernardia globiflora)
  • Contributed to carbon sequestration, improved soil fertility, and water retention
  • Reduced pressure on natural forests by promoting sustainable land management
  • Created income opportunities for women and youth through seed collection and nursery activities
  • Sold over 500 Forest Packs and tree seedlings

Our work demonstrates that restoration, climate action, and livelihoods can grow together when communities lead the process.
